ESERA 2019 is the 13th Biennial Conference of the European Science Education Research Association. ESERA was founded in Leeds, England, in April 1995.
The ESERA 2019 Conference is organised by Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna, and will be held in Bologna from 26 to 30 August 2019 at Polo Congressuale.
The theme we chose for the conference is: “The beauty and pleasure of understanding: engaging with contemporary challenges through science education.” Bologna is, according to Times Higher Education, the most beautiful university in the world because of its historical buildings. We hope that the surroundings and the conference theme will inspire our research and contextualise the discussions during the conference.
The organisation of the conference is led by Olivia Levrini (Conference President) and Giulia Tasquier (Conference Manager), with the help of the Steering Committee, the Local Organising Committee, the Scientific Committee and the ESERA Executive Board. Technical and logistic support is provided by EGA worldwide.
ESERA is traditionally organised by a university in order to offer the opportunity to better know local researchers’ communities, as well as to enhance actions aimed at increasing the interest of PhD students toward science education research. Young researchers are very welcome in the ESERA conferences and there are several spaces especially designed for them to learn, discuss, share their ideas and develop themselves as professionals within a lively research context.
Within ESERA, there are a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). SIGs are intended to operate as self-enabled organising structures, functioning as specialized, thematic groups within the ESERA community. Each SIG is coordinated by researchers that serve as a liaison between the members of the SIG, the ESERA Executive Board and the ESERA community as a whole. The coordinators of the SIGs take on an active role in the conference. In particular, they organise symposia that connect SIGs’ parallel activities with the entire research community.
Plenary presentations and parallel sessions are planned. The latter include symposia, oral presentations, interactive poster sessions and workshops, organised according to the eighteen ESERA research strands and to the theme of the conference.
